Cashmere is a natural, biodegradable fibre that, cared for well, lasts for years — but conventional production carries real environmental costs, from grazing pressure on fragile grassland to the water and chemicals used in dyeing. At Lumusae we reduce that footprint where we can: our cashmere is left undyed, so no dyes, bleaches or dye-water are used, it is hand-combed rather than intensively farmed, NPIA-certified for fibre authenticity and origin, and made to last rather than to be replaced each season. Below we set out both sides, including the parts that do not flatter us.
The case against cashmere — stated properly
Most brand-written answers to this question skip straight to the advantages. We would rather start with the criticism, because it is legitimate and because you will find it elsewhere anyway.

The land problem is real. Cashmere goats graze differently from sheep — they pull at roots rather than cropping grass, which slows or prevents pasture regeneration. Where herd sizes have expanded, grassland degradation has followed. Mongolia's grasslands have been extensively affected, and cashmere grazing is one significant driver alongside climate pressure.
Fast fashion caused the expansion. When cashmere moved from luxury into high-street price points, the only way to meet demand was more goats. Herd numbers rose sharply. The environmental cost of cheap cashmere is not incidental to it — it is the mechanism that made it cheap.
The yield is brutally low. A single goat produces roughly 150 grams of usable fine fibre per year. A sweater takes the annual output of several animals. This is the underlying reason cashmere cannot be cheap without something going wrong somewhere.
Supply is concentrated. China and Mongolia together account for over 90% of world raw cashmere production. That concentration limits how much any small brand elsewhere can influence upstream practice, including ours.
Goats are ruminants. Livestock is a substantial contributor to human-caused methane emissions, and cashmere goats are no exception.
None of that disappears because a fibre is natural. The honest position is that cashmere's environmental cost is concentrated at the start of its life, and its benefit accumulates across a long one. Buy one good piece and keep it fifteen years and the arithmetic works. Buy six cheap ones and replace them every two seasons and it does not — and that second pattern is what drove the overgrazing in the first place.
What is Cashmere and How is it Sourced?
Cashmere is made from the fine undercoat fibres of Changra goats raised in high-altitude Himalayan regions. These goats withstand harsh conditions because of their naturally dense, soft fleece.

During the natural moulting season, herders comb the fine undercoat by hand rather than shearing. Combing is gentler and yields finer fibre; shearing is faster and picks up more coarse guard hair. The fibre is then dehaired, sorted and spun.
Because a single goat produces limited fibre, it takes several animals to produce enough for one sweater. That slowness is inherent to the material.
The quality of natural cashmere knitwear is influenced by:
- Fibre fineness and length
- Thoroughness of dehairing
- Traditional combing and harvesting methods
- Minimal chemical processing and dyeing
- Artisan weaving and knitting expertise
- Ethical and responsible sourcing practices
Why Pure Cashmere Feels Different From Other Fabrics
Compared with heavily processed synthetic knitwear, well-dehaired cashmere feels finer against the skin. The fibres are fine enough to insulate without bulk, which is why cashmere is warm for its weight. That balance of warmth and softness is what distinguishes it from a synthetic imitation, and it is a function of fibre diameter rather than branding.
The part most sustainability pages skip: processing chemistry
Coverage of cashmere sustainability focuses almost entirely on goats and grassland. The chemistry between raw fleece and finished garment gets ignored, and it shouldn't — because "natural fibre" describes the raw material, not the finished product.
Scouring and dehairing. Raw fibre arrives with grease, dust and vegetable matter in it. Removing that requires detergents and, in some supply chains, solvents. This step is unavoidable. Any brand claiming their cashmere has never met a chemical is either misinformed or counting on you not to ask what happens to raw fleece.
Dyeing. The largest chemical input in most knitwear, and the most water-intensive stage. The specific concern is azo dyes — a very large dye class, a minority of which can break down to release aromatic amines classified as carcinogenic. These are restricted in the EU and tested under the major textile standards, but restriction in one jurisdiction is not the same as absence from a garment made elsewhere.
Anti-felting treatments. What makes an animal-fibre garment machine washable. The dominant industrial route is the chlorine-Hercosett process: chlorination of the fibre surface followed by a polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin coating. It generates adsorbable organic halogens in wastewater, which is why it is contested. If a cashmere garment is sold as machine washable, it is worth asking what made it so.
Moth-proofing. Insect-resist treatments on animal fibres have historically used permethrin and related compounds — not universal, but common on goods that sit in warehouses.

Is Cashmere Sustainable? The Real Picture
As global demand has risen, the industry has come under greater scrutiny over sourcing transparency. Not every cashmere piece is made with the same level of care. Traditional approaches prioritise craftsmanship and fibre integrity; mass production is driven by efficiency and cost.
Many manufacturers have increased synthetic blending, heavier processing and large-scale sourcing. That supports affordability while placing pressure on grazing ecosystems.
For today's buyers, sustainability is not defined by labels alone. It means understanding how a garment was made. The following points explain what makes undyed cashmere knitwear for men and women a more considered choice.
Why Some Cashmere Production Raises Sustainability Concerns
As demand increased, many manufacturers shifted toward faster, larger-scale production. That expansion made cashmere more accessible and simultaneously raised concerns about sourcing. Where volume displaces craftsmanship, the result is lower-grade fibre, more synthetic blending, and shorter garment life.
Ethical Sourcing Changes the Sustainability Profile
Responsible sourcing places emphasis on traditional collection methods and slower production cycles. In many Himalayan communities, herders collect fibre through seasonal hand-combing, which maintains fleece quality while handling animals more gently than shearing.
Worth being precise, though: hand-combing is a practice, not a certification. Only herd-level schemes such as the Good Cashmere Standard or the Sustainable Fibre Alliance independently verify animal welfare, and both are centred on China and Mongolia.
Why Fibre Quality Matters in Sustainable Luxury
Durability is the single largest lever in garment sustainability. A piece worn 200 times has a fraction of the per-wear impact of one worn 15 times, regardless of what it is made of.
Cheap or blended knitwear tends to pill out and lose shape within a season or two. A thoughtfully made garment such as the undyed pure Himalayan cashmere artisan cape is built to stay in a wardrobe for years. Longevity is what makes the initial impact worth it.
Role of Slow Fashion in Making Cashmere More Sustainable
Slow fashion shifts away from rapid trend cycles toward timeless pieces. Cashmere aligns with that naturally: it is warm for its weight, layers across seasons, and resists odour so it needs washing less often — which itself saves water, energy and detergent across a garment's life.
Is Undyed Cashmere More Environmentally Responsible?
Yes, and this is the clearest single advantage we can point to. Dyeing is the largest chemical input in knitwear. Leaving fibre undyed removes that entire stage: no azo dyes, no fixatives, no dye-house effluent, no dye water.
Undyed cashmere uses the fleece's own colours — ivory, dove grey, cocoa — sorted rather than coloured. For many buyers that reads as a quieter form of luxury. For us it is simply the largest reduction available.
Why Synthetic Knitwear Has Raised Environmental Concerns
Many modern winter garments use polyester, acrylic or nylon, chosen for lower cost and manufacturing convenience. These are petrochemical plastics, and they behave differently at end of life.
Machine-made Fibres Release Microplastics
Synthetic knitwear is made from plastic-based fibres that shed microfibres during wear and washing. Unlike natural fibres, these do not break down easily and continue circulating through waterways for years. Acrylic is consistently among the higher-shedding common textiles in published studies.
Common sources of microplastic pollution in knitwear include:

- Nylon-blended knitwear
- Fast-fashion fabric blends
One qualification worth making: this is an environmental argument about what enters waterways, not a demonstrated personal-health harm from wearing the garment. And it only applies to pure fibre — a sweater that is 30% cashmere and 70% acrylic sheds like acrylic, because it mostly is acrylic.
Plastic-Based Fabrics Are Difficult to Decompose
Most synthetic textiles are petroleum-derived and can persist in landfill for extended periods. Natural fibres such as cashmere are biodegradable and return to the environment under natural conditions, provided they have not been blended with synthetics.

Low-cost synthetic knitwear is built for short trend cycles, using lower-quality fibres and intensive chemical treatment. That model contributes to:

- Shorter garment life cycles
Chemical Processing Impacts Textile Sustainability
Many synthetic pieces undergo multiple chemical treatments during dyeing and finishing to achieve uniform texture and vivid colour. Choosing undyed cashmere knitwear for women and men avoids the largest of those stages entirely.
What the certifications actually cover
Certification in textiles is genuinely confusing, and no single standard covers everything. It is worth knowing which question each one answers.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests the finished product for harmful substances. It says nothing about grassland, animal welfare, carbon or labour.
bluesign manages chemical inputs and wet processing. Its criteria exclude purely natural fibres — cotton, linen, wool and silk — so "bluesign certified cashmere" misdescribes the standard as a fibre claim.
GOTS requires certified organic livestock management from the farm onward. Very little cashmere qualifies.
The Good Cashmere Standard and SFA are the ones that genuinely address grassland and animal welfare, through herder and processor certification. Both are centred on China and Mongolia.
NPIA / Chyangra Pashmina is Nepal's collective mark. It verifies fibre fineness, purity and traceable origin, with a serial number you can check. It is an authenticity mark, not a chemical-safety or welfare certification.

What we do. Our fibre is Himalayan Chyangra cashmere, hand-combed during the natural moult. Our core range is undyed, removing the largest chemical stage. Nothing is given an anti-felting or machine-washable treatment, which is why our care instructions say hand wash and dry flat. Nothing is moth-proofed. Pieces are hand-knitted in Nepal, a low-energy production method compared with powered industrial knitting. Every piece carries an NPIA serial number you can verify.
What we haven't solved. We hold no chemical-safety certification — not OEKO-TEX, not anything comparable. Some pieces in our range are dyed, and for those we cannot yet give you third-party test results. We hold no herd-level welfare certification such as the Good Cashmere Standard or SFA, and we do not have full grassland traceability for the pastures our fibre comes from. Those are real gaps. We would rather name them than let a sustainability page imply otherwise.
How to Identify Sustainable and High-Quality Cashmere Online
Check for Fibre Composition
Verify whether the garment is pure cashmere or blended with polyester, acrylic or nylon. Many commercial pieces use synthetic blends to cut cost while looking similar. Authentic cashmere knitwear will have a finer texture, lightweight insulation, and long-term wearability.
Understand Where the Fibres Come From
Responsible brands publish sourcing regions, collection methods and production practices. Ask for a certificate number you can independently check — a logo with no verifiable number is decoration.
Look for Undyed and Microplastic-free Knitwear
Undyed cashmere preserves the fibre's natural tone and skips the dye stage entirely. Unlike synthetics, pure cashmere sheds no plastic microfibres.
Evaluate Construction and Finish
Look for dense even knitting, refined stitching, smooth fabric consistency, durable finishing and timeless silhouettes. Note that cashmere does pill in early wears as short fibre ends surface — that reduces over time and a cashmere comb handles it.
Look Beyond Aesthetics
Authentic cashmere costs more, and the craftsmanship generally justifies it — but only if the piece lasts. Judge fibre length, dehairing quality and ply rather than price alone.
