Is Cashmere Non-Toxic? What "Natural Fibre" Does and Doesn't Guarantee
By Shivani RanjitIf you have started paying attention to what your clothes are made of, you have probably run into a comforting idea: natural fibres are the safe ones, synthetics are the problem.
It is a useful rule of thumb. It is also incomplete — and we would rather tell you that than let you buy from us for the wrong reason.
Cashmere comes off a goat. But between the goat and the sweater sit scouring, dyeing, finishing and sometimes moth-proofing. The fibre is natural. The process is chemistry. Anyone selling you cashmere who skips straight from "it's natural" to "so it's clean" is skipping the part that actually matters.
Here is the honest version.
Why we don't use the phrase "non-toxic"
You will notice we avoid it. That is deliberate.
"Non-toxic" is not a regulated term in apparel. There is no test a garment passes to earn it, and no agency that signs off on it. The US Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides address the phrase directly: it is deceptive to misrepresent that a product is non-toxic, consumers reasonably read the claim as meaning safe for both people and the environment, and any brand using it needs competent and reliable scientific evidence behind it.
Most brands using the phrase do not have that evidence. They have a natural fibre and a copywriter.
"Chemical-free" is worse, because it is not even coherent — water is a chemical, and so is the keratin protein that cashmere is made of. When you see either phrase on a product page, it tells you about the brand's marketing, not the garment.
What we can talk about instead is specifics: which substances were tested for, by whom, and what the result was. That is a smaller claim. It is also one you can check.
What cashmere genuinely has going for it
Not everything about the natural-fibre argument is marketing. Some of it holds up.

It doesn't shed microplastics. Cashmere is a protein fibre, structurally closer to your own hair than to plastic. Acrylic, polyester and nylon are petrochemical plastics, and they release synthetic microfibres in the wash. Cashmere does not, because there is no plastic in it to release.
It isn't the fabric where BPA turned up. When the Center for Environmental Health ran its activewear testing across 2022 and 2023, the elevated bisphenol A readings were found in polyester-based garments containing spandex — leggings, sports bras, athletic shirts. Not in wool. Not in cashmere. Fibre category genuinely mattered in those findings.
It has no functional reason to carry a PFAS finish. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are applied to textiles to make them repel water, oil and stains. That is a performance function nobody asks of a cashmere shawl. Outdoor shells and stain-resistant upholstery are where those finishes live.
It biodegrades. Provided it hasn't been blended with synthetics, cashmere breaks down as organic matter at end of life.
Those are four real advantages. None of them is "cashmere is chemically pure".
What actually happens to cashmere between the goat and you
This is the part the natural-fibre story tends to leave out.
Scouring and degreasing. Raw fibre arrives with grease, dust and vegetable matter in it. Getting that out uses detergents and, in some supply chains, solvents.

Dyeing. This is the single biggest chemical input in most knitwear. The concern to know about is azo dyes — a large dye family, a minority of which can break down to release aromatic amines classified as carcinogenic. These are restricted in the EU and tested for under the major textile safety standards, but "restricted in the EU" and "absent from a specific garment made elsewhere" are not the same statement.
Anti-felting and machine-washable finishes. If a wool or cashmere garment is sold as machine washable, something was usually done to the fibre's surface scales to stop them locking together. The dominant industrial method is the chlorine-Hercosett process — chlorination followed by a polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin coating. It works well. It also generates adsorbable organic halogens in the wastewater, which is why it is contested. A garment that says "hand wash only" has often simply skipped this step.
Moth-proofing. Insect-resist treatments on animal fibres have historically used permethrin and related compounds. Not universal, but not rare either, particularly on goods that will sit in warehouses.
Softeners and finishing agents. Some of that immediate hand-feel in a shop is finish rather than fibre. It washes out. Genuinely fine cashmere doesn't need it.
None of this means your cashmere sweater is dangerous. It means "natural fibre" describes the raw material, not the finished product — and the finished product is what touches your skin.
What the evidence on skin absorption actually shows
Worth being precise here, because this topic attracts a lot of overstatement.
There is real research on bisphenols migrating out of textiles. A 2024 study in Environmental Science and Pollution Research tested 57 textiles and modelled dermal exposure. The finding was nuanced: exposure from dry fabric stayed below the European Food Safety Authority's tolerable daily intake, while sweat-wet fabric could exceed it in some scenarios.
That supports the mechanism people describe — heat, moisture and occlusion increase transfer. It does not support the figures circulating on wellness blogs about absorption multiplying thousands of times, which trace back to secondary sources rather than to the studies they cite.
It also points somewhere specific. If sweat, tightness and hours of contact are what drive transfer, then the priority garments are the ones that are tight, synthetic and worn while you sweat. A loose cashmere shawl over a shirt is close to the opposite of that scenario.
We would rather you understood the reasoning than took our word for the conclusion.
What to check instead of the word "natural"
Three things, in descending order of usefulness.
1. A named third-party certification, with a number. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is the relevant one for chemical safety in finished textiles. It tests the actual product — including thread, dye and trims — against limits for restricted substances, and it is issued per certificate with an ID you can verify on OEKO-TEX's own Label Check tool. Product Class II is the tier for textiles worn in prolonged direct skin contact. Certificates run for twelve months and have to be renewed, so a valid certificate is also a current one.
2. Specific test results, honestly framed. A brand that says "independently tested by an accredited lab; azo-derived arylamines below the limit of detection, report dated March 2026" is telling you more than a brand saying "clean and toxin-free". The first is checkable. The second is atmosphere.
3. Fibre composition on the label. 100% cashmere means no synthetic blend, no microplastic shedding, and no plastic-adjacent additive chemistry. A "cashmere blend" at 30% cashmere and 70% acrylic is mostly plastic with a nice word on the front.
What should not be on your list: the words non-toxic, chemical-free, toxin-free, clean, or pure. They are unregulated, and their presence tells you nothing about the garment.
Where Lumusae stands
We hold no chemical-safety certification. Not OEKO-TEX, not anything else. By the standard we have just set out, that means what follows is unverified — it is us describing our own process, not a third party confirming it. Weigh it accordingly.
Here is what we can tell you, in the order the chemistry actually happens.
Scouring: yes, unavoidably. Raw cashmere arrives with grease, dust and vegetable matter in it, and removing that requires detergent. Any brand telling you their cashmere has never met a chemical is either misinformed or counting on you not to ask what happens to raw fleece.
Dyeing: mostly not. The core of what we make is undyed — the fleece's own colours, sorted rather than coloured. That matters more than it sounds, because dyeing is the largest chemical input in most knitwear, and skipping it removes the whole category at once: no azo dyes, no fixatives, no dye-house effluent. Some pieces are dyed, and we would rather say so than let "undyed brand" quietly cover a whole range. For those, we can tell you they are dyed. We cannot yet hand you a third-party test report on them. That gap is ours to close.
Anti-felting: none. No chlorine-Hercosett, no resin coating on the fibre surface. This is why our care instructions say hand wash and dry flat, and why they will continue to. Machine-washability in animal fibres is bought with surface chemistry, and we have chosen not to buy it.
Moth-proofing: none. Nothing is treated with permethrin or related insect-resist compounds before storage or shipping. Store yours clean, with cedar rather than chemistry.
Certification: not yet. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 at Product Class II is the right standard for what we make, and it is on our list. Until we can give you a number you can check for yourself, we are not going to imply we have one.
That is a smaller claim than most of what you will read on a cashmere product page. It is also specific at every point, which is the part that matters.
Common questions
Is cashmere a natural fibre?
Yes. It is the fine undercoat of the cashmere goat, and it is a protein fibre — chemically closer to hair than to anything petroleum-derived.
Does cashmere contain BPA?
The activewear testing that generated the BPA headlines found elevated readings specifically in polyester-based garments containing spandex, not in animal fibres. That said, no fibre is automatically exempt from every substance, which is exactly why finished-product testing exists rather than fibre-type assumptions.
Does cashmere shed microplastics?
Pure cashmere does not — there is no plastic in it. Cashmere blended with acrylic, polyester or nylon will shed from the synthetic portion, so check the composition label.
Is "chemical-free" cashmere a real thing?
No. Every material is made of chemicals, including cashmere, and raw fibre cannot be cleaned without detergent. What can be real is cashmere that skips specific chemical stages — dyeing, anti-felting, moth-proofing — or cashmere tested against defined limits for named substances. Both are checkable. "Chemical-free" is not.
Does washing cashmere before wearing help?
A gentle first wash in cool water with a pH-neutral wool detergent removes surface finishing residues and any dust from transit. It is sensible practice with any new garment worn against skin, and it does no harm to good cashmere.
