Does Cashmere Itch? Cashmere for Sensitive Skin and Eczema

    If wool has ever made you want to claw your own shoulders off, you have probably concluded you are allergic to it. Most people who think this are not.

    The itch is real. The explanation is usually mechanical rather than immune — and once you know what causes it, the reason fine cashmere behaves so differently stops being a marketing claim and starts being physics.

    The itch is about fibre diameter, not fibre type

    Wool fibres are stiff enough that when a cut fibre end presses into skin, it doesn't bend — it pushes. Push hard enough on the nerve endings sitting just below the skin surface and you get the prickle sensation.

    Whether a fibre bends or pushes depends almost entirely on how thick it is. Textile researchers have measured this for decades, and the threshold sits somewhere around 30 microns. Above roughly that diameter, fibre ends are stiff enough to trigger the prickle response in most people. Below it, they buckle harmlessly against the skin.

    This is why "wool" is a useless category for predicting itch. A coarse carpet wool at 35 microns and a fine merino at 18 microns are both wool, and they feel like completely different materials.

    Rough guide to where common fibres sit:

    Cashmere sits at the fine end of that range because of what it is: not the goat's outer guard hair, but the downy undercoat grown for insulation. The coarse guard hairs are separated out during dehairing — and how thoroughly that is done is one of the clearest markers of cashmere quality.

    Poor dehairing is what makes "cashmere" itch

    Here is the thing that catches people out: a garment can be genuinely 100% cashmere and still prickle.

    If dehairing was rushed, coarse guard hairs stay in the yarn. Those hairs are 40 microns and up — well above the prickle threshold — and it takes very few of them scattered through a knit to make the whole garment feel scratchy. The label is accurate. The experience is awful.

    This is a large part of why cashmere prices vary so wildly. Cheap cashmere is usually shorter-fibre, less thoroughly dehaired, and blended down. It pills within weeks and it prickles from day one. Buying it and concluding "cashmere itches on me" is a reasonable inference from bad evidence.

    Short fibre length compounds it. Longer fibres can be spun with fewer loose ends protruding from the yarn surface, which means fewer ends available to press into your skin.

    True wool allergy is rare — and it isn't usually the wool

    Genuine immune-mediated allergy to wool protein exists but is uncommon. When dermatologists investigate reactions to woollen garments, the culprit is more often one of:

    • Contact irritation from coarse fibre. The mechanical prickle above, which enough repeated scratching can escalate into genuine irritation.
    • Textile dye contact dermatitis. Disperse dyes are a recognised contact allergen, and dye chemistry is a garment-processing variable rather than a fibre property.
    • Finishing residues. Formaldehyde-based resins, softeners and anti-felting treatments all sit on the fabric surface, and all are things a sensitive person can react to.
    • Detergent residue. Enzymatic and heavily perfumed detergents left in fibre are a frequent, under-diagnosed cause.

    That third and fourth point matter for anyone with reactive skin, because they are not solved by choosing a natural fibre. They are solved by knowing what was done to it — which is why we wrote separately about what "natural fibre" does and doesn't guarantee.

    Cashmere and eczema

    We want to be careful here, because this is where a lot of brands overreach.

    What can be said reasonably: people with eczema and atopic skin often report better tolerance of superfine fibres than coarse ones, and clinical work on superfine merino in atopic dermatitis has generally found it well tolerated rather than aggravating — which contradicts the old blanket advice to avoid all wool. Fine cashmere sits in a similar diameter range.

    What cannot be said: that cashmere treats, improves or is safe for any individual's eczema. Skin conditions are individual, flare triggers vary, and a fabric recommendation is not a clinical one.

    If you have diagnosed eczema, the sensible approach is a patch test on a small area before wearing a new garment for a full day, and a conversation with your dermatologist rather than with a knitwear brand.

    If your cashmere still prickles

    Worth trying, in order:

    Wash it before first wear. Cool water, pH-neutral wool detergent, no fabric softener. This removes finishing residues and transit dust. It also relaxes fibres that have been compressed in packaging. A surprising number of "scratchy" new garments simply need this.

    Rinse thoroughly. Detergent left in the fibre is a common irritant. Rinse until the water runs completely clear.

    Give it a wear-in period. Loose fibre ends work their way out of the yarn surface over the first few wears and washes. Genuine cashmere gets softer with use — this is one of the ways it differs from acrylic, which degrades instead.

    Check what is underneath. A shawl or open cardigan worn over a shirt has minimal skin contact by design. A crewneck worn against bare skin at the neck is the highest-contact scenario there is.

    Reconsider the garment. If it prickles persistently after washing and wearing, it is likely to be under-dehaired or blended. That is a product problem, not a you problem.

    Common questions

    Is cashmere softer than merino wool?
    Generally yes, because cashmere fibre is finer — typically 14 to 19 microns against merino's 17 to 24. Merino has the edge on elasticity and durability, so it holds shape better under hard wear. They are optimised for different things.

    Can you be allergic to cashmere?
    True allergy to the fibre protein is rare. Most reactions attributed to cashmere are mechanical irritation from coarse guard hairs left in poorly dehaired yarn, or a response to dyes, finishing chemistry or detergent residue rather than to the fibre itself.

    Does cashmere get softer over time?
    Good cashmere does. Fibres relax and loose ends work out with wear and gentle washing. Cashmere that gets harsher or matts instead usually indicates short fibres, over-washing, or heat damage from a tumble dryer.

    Is cashmere good for babies and sensitive skin?
    Its fineness makes it one of the gentler animal fibres mechanically. For anyone with reactive skin — infants included — the more useful question is what chemistry the finished garment carries, which is what a certification like OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 documents. Product Class I covers items for babies and toddlers and applies the strictest limits.

    Why does my expensive cashmere itch?
    Price is not a reliable proxy for dehairing quality. Check whether it is a blend, whether it has been washed before wearing, and whether the prickle is at the neckline specifically — the highest-contact point on most sweaters.
