Where do I measure a sweater?

Every measurement is taken with the garment laid flat and unstretched, in inches, measured straight across the garment and not doubled. The points differ by style — a cardigan is measured with the front closed and a zip style with the zip shut. Three styles have no full-length sleeve to measure — the sleeveless shell, the Gossamer 3/4 boatneck and the short-sleeve polo — so no arm length is given for those.

What if I am between sizes?

Size up for a relaxed, softly draping fit, and stay at your usual size for a closer one. Cashmere has natural give, so a piece that feels snug when new will ease slightly with wear. It does not, however, grow a size — if a garment is genuinely too small it will stay too small.

For the cable-knits, the heavyweight ribbed crewnecks and the cardigans, most people prefer their usual size — those are cut wider, or they stretch, already. The Ultra-Thick 4-Ply is the one to size up in if you are between sizes: it is cut to the same width as the table, and the thickness of the yarn takes up the room.

What size are the capes and ponchos?

Both come in one size, cut to drape rather than to fit, so there is nothing to choose — but the dimensions differ.

Measured flat. Neither has a shoulder seam or a fitted armhole, so both fall over whatever you wear beneath them. The poncho figure is the front panel only. The cape is an open-front style with no fastening — its 56-inch width becomes the sleeve when worn, and it falls to around the hip.

How are shawls and wraps sized?

Every shawl, wrap and pashmina we make is one size: 28 × 84 in (approx. 71 × 213 cm). There is nothing to choose.

That 28-inch width is generous enough to wrap twice around the neck, drape full-length over the shoulders, or open out as a blanket on a flight.

What size are the bed throws?

The Heirloom bed throws come in two sizes.

Both are the same length; the Grand is ten inches wider. For scale, a standard American throw is around 50 × 60 in — both of these are considerably larger.

A note on what these are. These are bed throws, not bed blankets. They are made to lie across a bed or over a sofa, and they will not drape down over the sides of a mattress — a blanket sized to do that would need to be roughly 90 in wide or more. If you are looking for full mattress coverage, talk to us first rather than sizing up and hoping.

How do I choose my sock size?

The knee-high socks come in two sizes, both hand-knitted in a deep rib that stretches to the shape of the leg.

Check your calf, not just your foot

On a sock this length, calf circumference decides the fit more than shoe size does — it is what determines whether the cuff grips or slides down. Measure around the widest part of your calf and use the last column above. If your foot and your calf point at different sizes, follow the calf.

If your calf is above 18", these will not sit comfortably at the knee. Tell us before ordering and we will say honestly whether they will work for you.

Between sizes?

Size down. A ribbed knit holds the leg better with a little tension in it; sized up, a knee-high tends to work its way down through the day.

What size are the beanies and headbands?

All of them are one size. There is nothing to choose, but the constructions differ and they do not all reach the same head — so check the range for the piece you want rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Laid flat and unstretched, cuff unrolled. Relaxed circumference is the flat width doubled — it is the garment at rest, not the head it fits.

Those last four are the same hat in different colours — identical yarn, ply and weight. The hand-knits are a short cuffed cut that sits above the ears rather than covering them.

Where we measure a headband

Headband measurements

Headbands are quoted in forehead measurement, beanies in head measurement. The two are not interchangeable: the forehead path misses the bump at the back of the skull and runs half an inch to an inch and a half smaller. Do not use your hat size to pick a headband.

The Gomba twist does not stretch at all, so every bit of give is in the back panel — judge the fit loose rather than snug.

Find your size

Between two that both fit? Haven and Heritage sit closer to the head; the four hand-knits sit looser and warmer. Pick by how you like a hat to sit rather than by size.

Hand wash cool and dry flat, reshaping while damp. Never hang a wet piece or stretch it over a form — that is the fastest way to lose the brim dimension these figures describe.

Which pieces are one size?

Beanies, headbands and wrist warmers are made in a single size. Beanie and headband dimensions and head ranges are in the section above. Wrist warmers are ribbed with enough stretch to fit the great majority of adults and are designed to sit close without gripping.
